Contaminant leakage threat led to dump closure

A contaminant at a construction waste disposal site in Hazelbrook, P.E.I., was leaking or about to leak into the environment, says the order closing it down.

The order issued by Environment Minister George Webster on Friday also cites the operators for dumping waste within 30 metres of the nearest property boundary.

Webster would not go into details of why the dump was shut down when contacted by CBC News, but the information was contained in the order. It did not reveal what the contaminant was.

Dump operator charged

A ministerial order and charges under the Environmental Protection Act have been applied to the operators of the Hazelbrook dumpsite following a horrid smell that spread through the region during the past few weeks.

Described as a “rotten egg” smell, the public complaints led to an investigation by the Department of Environment. Charges were laid against the owners Friday for failing to observe the buffer zone and a ministerial order told the company to stop accepting materials and bring the site up to compliance standards with operating regulations.
