Upcoming Workshop on Invasive Species

Workshop on Invasive Species
Saturday, March 15th, 9:00am till Noon
New London Community Complex

Invasive species can have a huge negative impact not only on the natural environment, but also on our economy. Research has shown that invasive species can displace native species in forest communities. Recently, the introduction species such as various forms of tunicate, green crab and oyster thief are having a dramatic impact on our shellfishery.

Recognizing that we all have a role to play in preventing the spread of invasive species for the benefit of the environment and the benefit of those making a living in our woods and waters, the Trout River Environmental Committee Inc. would like to invite fishers, shellfishers, woodlot owners and the general public to a workshop on invasive species.

The workshop will take place on Saturday, March the 15th at the New London Community Complex. Beginning at 9:00am, the workshop will open with a presentation by local biologist and Kate MacQuarrie who will present a general overview of invasive species, including some of the problem species we have here in PEI.

At 10:00a.m., ecological restoration forestry expert Gary Schneider from the Macphail Woods Ecological Forestry Project will then give a talk on invasive species in our forests and the problems associated with their cultivation and economic value. At 11:00am, to finish the morning's workshop Peter Warris of the PEI Aquaculture Alliance will discuss various aquatic invasive species and the effects on the local shellfishery. After each presenter, there will be ample time for questions and discussion.

There is no charge for the workshop, but those interested in attending are encouraged to register by contacting TREC by phone at 886-3390 or email at troutriverec@gmail.com.

Refreshments will be available, if you would like more information about the meeting please contact TREC at 886-3390 or email troutriverec@gmail.com.
