MONTAGUE — Exasperated farmers and agitated consumers all took tongue-lashings Monday night during a public meeting surrounding the future of establishing a biofuel industry on P.E.I.
There were charges, verbal sucker punches and lots of cajoling as the Council of Canadians held the second public meeting session to initiate discussion on whether Island farmers should grow sugar beets (or other crops) for fuel and an $85-million plant be built in Borden-Carleton to process it.

Close to 60 people made a standing room only crowd in Charlottetown Monday as the startling complexity surrounding biofuel production became a public debate. The Council of Canadians hosted the forum that featured three speakers. Danny Hendricken representing the National Farmers Union was one of them. “It is a delicate situation for the farming community,” he said. “It can cause a lot of divisiveness.”

Contaminant leakage threat led to dump closure

A contaminant at a construction waste disposal site in Hazelbrook, P.E.I., was leaking or about to leak into the environment, says the order closing it down.
The order issued by Environment Minister George Webster on Friday also cites the operators for dumping waste within 30 metres of the nearest property boundary.
Webster would not go into details of why the dump was shut down when contacted by CBC News, but the information was contained in the order. It did not reveal what the contaminant was.

Shutdown period indefinite until violations addressed, minister says

The P.E.I. government has shut down a controversial construction waste disposal site in Hazelbrook, north of Charlottetown, until it complies with environmental orders.
An order came from the office of Environment Minister George Webster Friday afternoon.
"There were one or two violations," said Webster.

Residents want smell gone from Hazelbrook dump site

A ghastly, nauseating smell has returned to the community of Hazelbrook and residents want a local dump owner to immediately stop the odour.
A meeting between the two groups was held Tuesday in Charlottetown.
“It's unbearable,’’ said resident Gordon Gallant of the smell somewhat like rotten eggs with overtones of something even more sickening that occasionally drifts over his house on the Gay Road.
