An Overnight Excursion
Sept 9th-10th – $225
Bushcraft is the art of living comfortably in nature. Learning to light a fire, construct a shelter or cook outdoors are just a few of the essential skills that connect us to the land and remind us of our dependance on nature.
We believe that it is impossible to leave no trace but with sound ecological knowledge and skills the trace we leave can improve the health of our wild spaces. Through skillful pruning, proper harvesting techniques and plant identification, students will develop a profound respect for our infinitely complex ecosystems, leaving the forest a better place.
Intro to Bushcraft Ecology is a two-day overnight course that will provide students with confidence, comfort and respect for the natural world around us.
Over the two days, participants will learn:
- fire lighting (matches, magnesium sticks, and friction)
- fire safety
- knot tying
- plant and animal identification
- wildlife tracking
- wild food foraging
- outdoor cookery
- shelter building
- knife use and safety
- pruning skills
- wood carving
- and more..
This course will be excellent for educators, camp instructors, parents, or anyone who likes the sweet smell of campfires on a fall night.
The weekend course runs from Saturday morning at 9am till Sunday afternoon at 3pm. Meals will be included in the course registration fees, as well as use of knives, cooking gear, magnesium sticks, binoculars, pruning shears and saws. Participants will have the opportunity to build a shelter but should also bring their own tent for the overnight stay. The total cost for the course is $225.

We use our very own Nature Centre, located on the Sir Andrew Macphail Homestead property, as a home base for all of our outdoor activities. Located just 20 minutes east of Charlottetown, the Macphail Woods Nature Centre has a variety of teaching spaces and is surrounded by 140 acres of forest and field. Winding through the property are four trails, a stream and one of the province’s finest remaining examples of our native Acadian forest.
