Owl Prowl #1 2017

Come celebrate the wonderful world of owls at one of three Owl Prowls at the Macphail Homestead in Orwell on April 21, 22 and 29. The Sir Andrew Macphail Foundation will open up the Great Room of the Homestead at 6:30pm and serve light refreshments. Visitors can warm themselves by the fireplace and enjoy the historic beauty that surrounds them. There will be no cost but donations to the Foundation will be gratefully accepted.

Then at 7:30pm, the Macphail Woods Ecological Forestry Project is holding its first Owl Prowl of the season at the Nature Centre. There will be a second owl prowl held on Earth Day, April 22nd, and a third on April 23rd, but visitors are asked to only attend one of these events.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about a fascinating family of rarely-seen birds. From the tiny “saw whet” to the large “great horned”, owls have long been birds of mythology and misinformation. The workshop will separate fact from fiction, combining a slide show with an outdoor walk.

The talk starts with slides and taped calls of common and uncommon owls that can be seen on Prince Edward Island. There are also mounted displays of most of these birds as well as other educational material on owls and their habits.

Participants can then take a guided walk around the woods and try calling in owls. Make sure to bring clothes suitable to weather conditions. There is no admission for the workshop and everyone is welcome. This is a very popular event and visitors are advised to come early.

This owl prowl kicks off an extensive series of outdoor activities at Macphail Woods, a project of the Environmental Coalition of Prince Edward Island. For more information on this or upcoming tours and workshops, please contact Gary Schneider at 651-2575, visit our website or find us on Facebook.

Bushcraft Ecology 2017

Bushcraft Ecology 2017 (Ages 12-16)

These campers will delight in learning survival skills such as one-match fire making, shelter building, rope making with natural fibers, and tracking animals. Touching on plant and tree identification, campers will learn the edible and medicinal properties of local plants. Our camp will include cooking over an open fire, and playing games that help develop the children’s senses and awareness to bring them closer to nature. Campers will also make natural crafts such as birch bark baskets, perform basic whittling and woodcarving. The experience also includes an overnight camp with activities such as meal preparation, s’mores, a forest night hike and stargazing.

Thursday – Overnight Campout

Leading up to and during the 30 hrs excursion we intend to work on specific skills with the campers. They are; how and what to pack for an overnight excursion, leaving no trace, basic personal and group safety protocols, navigation with map and compass, camp site selection, safe water collection, fire safety, outdoor cooking, nighttime ecology, owl calling, naked eye astronomy and wildlife observation. Many of these skills we already include in our current teaching, however for most of our campers it will be their first opportunity to test their abilities and learn first hand new skills in a practical setting.
