Learning to live well in the outdoors
Bushcraft can be described as the art of being comfortable in nature. It is also an incredibly useful skillset indoors or out. Whether family camping, hiking in the woods, or winter snowshoeing, basic bushcraft skills enhance any outdoor activity. Building confidence and competence, our courses aim to help you enjoy the outdoors whether in your backyard, deep in the woods, or on your next big adventure.
Bushcraft II: Parent-Child: $55

Session One: Saturday, May 16th 9am-1pm
There is great joy in sharing the wonders of nature with children. Join the capable staff at Macphail’s for a day of camp fires, shelter building and games. Adults and children alike will learn practical skills that include fire and knife safety, basic plant identification and wilderness navigation. Start your family adventure!
Session One: Saturday, June 27th 9am-1pm
Spend a fun day developing your outdoor savvy. Learn to tie the most essential knots, light a fire safely and consistently, hang a tarp quickly and securely, chop wood, build a tripod, pack essential kit and much more. The goal of this course is to make you comfortable and safe in any natural environment. Whether you’re out for a picnic, hike or expedition, these skills will serve you well.
This full-day course will introduce a variety of bushcraft skills, from useful knots and safe fire-use to navigation and ecology. We will provide the tools needed but feel free to bring your own equipment.
What to Bring
Participants should bring their own lunch and snacks and clothes suited to the weather as courses are primarily outdoors. We do have bathrooms on-site, a small kitchenette for coffee/tea, and a microwave. Although we provide various equipment for each course, bringing your own tools is always welcome and encouraged.
Location We use our very own Nature Centre, located on the Sir Andrew Macphail Homestead property, as a home base for all of our outdoor activities. Located just 20 minutes east of Charlottetown, the Macphail Woods Nature Centre has a variety of teaching spaces and is surrounded by 140 acres of forest and field. Winding through the property are four trails, a stream and one of the province’s finest remaining examples of our native Acadian forest.
