Please take care of each other and stay safe.

Since 1991, we’ve been offering a variety of free programming, from fun-for-the-whole-family events like our popular Owl Prowls to hands-on workshops like Pruning. We love to share our expertise and enthusiasm with anyone curious about our native landscapes.

Due to popular demand, our offerings have grown to include our adventure-filled Sharing a Love of Nature Summer Camps, our in-depth School of Woodland Ecology, and our immersive University Courses.

If you have any questions please contact us by phone (902)651-2575 or email: danielmcrae@macphailwoods.org

Birds 8 am and Breakfast 7 am
May 13 @ 8:00 am – 10:00 am

ovenbird smallerIsland woodlands are alive with birds and their songs. While year-round avian residents such as barred owls and juncos are already sitting on their nests, many migrants have just now returned and are singing up a storm. All in all, it is a great time for a walk in the woods. On Saturday, May 13, the public is invited to breakfast at the Sir Andrew Macphail Homestead in Orwell and then to take a closer look at Island birds along the trails.

The Macphail Homestead will be open at 7am to serve a free “early bird” breakfast. Join other birders beside the fireplace in the Great Room for your morning cup of coffee or tea and freshly baked breakfast treats to start your day out right! Donations will be gladly accepted to help cover costs.

The bird walk, led by long-time birders Fiep De Bie and Dwaine Oakley, starts at 8am outside the Macphail Woods Nature Centre. Participants will be listening to calls and identifying common and uncommon species as they walk the grounds and trails. The migratory warblers and thrushes in the woods include some of our best singers and most colourful feathered friends. The walk is an excellent way to increase your knowledge of birds, whether you are just beginning or have been birding for a long time. There is no charge for the walk.

This is just one of the many walks and workshops offered throughout the year at Macphail Woods. For more information call 651-2575, email us at macphailwoods@gmail.com or visit our Facebook page.

Fire Craft and Knife Safety
May 13 @ 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Fire Craft and Knife Safety

May 13th – 12pm-4pm – $45

Never play with fire or knives! Well, not until you’ve learned to use them safely. Despite using these essential tools throughout our lives, very few of us know how and where to use them properly. Knowing how can save your life, or just make a weekend camping trip more pleasurable.

This half day course will introduce students to the parts of a knife, safe knife grips, how to work with others and basic whittling techniques. They will also learn fire safety, how to find the best materials for tinder, kindling and fuel and firelighting techniques for wet and cold weather.

Location

We use our very own Nature Centre, located on the Sir Andrew Macphail Homestead property, as a home base for all of our outdoor activities. Located just 20 minutes east of Charlottetown, the Macphail Woods Nature Centre has a variety of teaching spaces and is surrounded by 140 acres of forest and field. Winding through the property are four trails, a stream and one of the province’s finest remaining examples of our native Acadian forest.

Pruning Trees and Shrubs
May 13 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

pruningThe Pruning Trees and Shrubs workshop begins at 2pm at the Macphail Woods Nature Centre.

The pruning workshop will be of interest to all those who work with and enjoy woody plants. Proper pruning maintains and improves the health and value of plants, whether in a commercial forest, a watershed, a private woodlot or just around your home.

It begins at the Nature Centre with a presentation on proper pruning practices and a discussion on tools and publications. There will then be a hands-on demonstration where participants can prune trees and shrubs of different species and ages. The presentation and pruning will show how to get the best results and avoid future problems. Participants should bring suitable weather gear and their favourite pruning tools, if available.

This is just one of the many walks and workshops offered throughout the year at Macphail Woods. For more information call 651-2575, email us at macphailwoods@gmail.com or visit our Facebook page.
