Fire Craft and Knife Safety

May 13th – 12pm-4pm – $45

Never play with fire or knives! Well, not until you’ve learned to use them safely. Despite using these essential tools throughout our lives, very few of us know how and where to use them properly. Knowing how can save your life, or just make a weekend camping trip more pleasurable.

This half day course will introduce students to the parts of a knife, safe knife grips, how to work with others and basic whittling techniques. They will also learn fire safety, how to find the best materials for tinder, kindling and fuel and firelighting techniques for wet and cold weather.

Location

We use our very own Nature Centre, located on the Sir Andrew Macphail Homestead property, as a home base for all of our outdoor activities. Located just 20 minutes east of Charlottetown, the Macphail Woods Nature Centre has a variety of teaching spaces and is surrounded by 140 acres of forest and field. The Backyard Arborist

Proper Pruning and Planting
June 10th – 9am-1pm – $45

“A conservationist is one who is humbly aware that with each stroke [of the axe] he is writing his signature on the face of the land.” -Aldo Leopold

Proper tree care is crucial to a healthy, beautiful and inviting yard. Keeping that shade tree’s canopy vigorous lets you enjoy a lovely nap in the afternoon heat. Quality pruning allows landscaped shrubs to put their energy into beautiful flowers rather than unsightly wounds. And knowing a dangerous branch lets you avoid damage to your house or others out enjoying the yard.

The Backyard Arborist course will focus on learning hands-on skills that you can take home to your yard to help ensure the vigour and beauty of your trees and shrubs. These skills will help gardeners of any variety enjoy, enhance, and improve their yards, hedges, and gardens when at home or at the cottage.

Identifying Native Trees and Shrubs

June 24th – 9am-1pm – $45

Learning how to recognize our native Island plants is a core skill whether you are a woodlot owner, nature enthusiast or someone who wants to live off the land. Often, learning what plants live around you can seem like an indomitable task but keeping your eyes open for certain patterns can being to unravel the mystery. At Macphail Woods, we often find plant identification to be a humbling task. No matter how adept or knowledgable you may be, the natural world is full of surprises and riddles for those looking. Solving these is a very rewarding experience that will open your eyes up to the world around you and help in many of your outdoor pursuits, from harvesting firewood to camping to birding and more.

As you begin to recognize individual species, different types of habitat become more apparent, what kinds of wildlife live in the area can be revealed and even soil types, water levels, and more can be gleaned.

For more than 25 years, Macphail Woods has been teaching plant identification to people of all ages, through our kids summer camps, school visits, UPEI course, free workshops and more. And over those years we’ve developed techniques to help anyone become more comfortable in our Island woods as well as get to know many of our Island species of trees and shrubs.

This course will take place at the Macphail Woods Nature Centre adjacent to our native plant nursery and arboretum which showcases many of the native species you can find across the province. The course will run 4 hours and include lots of outdoor hands-on experience looking at leaves, buds, branches and bark as well as the preferred habitats of many of these beautiful and sometime rare species.

Introduction to Native Botany

July 15th – 9am-1pm – $45

Plants are amazing creatures. Every year more scientific discoveries shed light on the fascinating lives of plants from tiny algae to ancient trees. A basic knowledge of botany can help with many outdoor activities from pruning to planting, forest restoration to harvesting and enrich forest hikes and seaside walks.

Using our native plant nursery and arboretum as well as forest trails, we will have hands-on examples to demonstrate how plants grow, how roots systems connect, strategies for survival and propagation and more. For more than 25 years Macphail Woods has been propagating rare species, experimenting with different techniques of forest restoration and looking at ecological connection between different habitats and plant communities.

This is a great course for any who have a love of nature and particularly for gardeners, woodlot owners, biology students, environmental educators and any one who likes to put on a pair of boots and get out on a trail.

How to Share a Love of Nature: A Course for Island Educators
Aug 2 – Aug 4 all-day

How to Share a Love of Nature

A Course for Island Educators
August 2nd-4th – 9am-3pm – $200

There is almost nothing as rewarding as watching a child fall in love with nature, to see them discover the wonder of something they thought was fearful or distant. Despite its huge potential, outdoor education can seem overwhelming, there is just so much to learn before feeling comfortable leading a class. After nearly 20 years of teaching, we have developed an intuitive and practical approach to describing native flora and fauna, instructors become co-learners with their students and together become birdwatchers, botanists and trackers.

This three-day course is for all educators and will happen concurrently with our summer camps giving participants the opportunity to gain direct experience. The course will give participants a foundational introduction to our Island’s incredible plants and animals and in so doing demonstrate our unique approach to nature education. Participants will learn: outdoor class management, simple educational games and crafts, how to describe the natural world using all five senses and how to use the schoolyard as a classroom for all subjects. And much, much more…
