Native Plant Species

The following guides are an introduction to some of the native plant species on Prince Edward Island. They provide basic information on identification, habitat and planting conditions. They are not an exhaustive list of the native species found in the province, but rather a tool for getting to know common species.

We use the conservation ranks provided by the Atlantic Canada Conservation Data Centre in our guides. These ranks determine the rarity of native species based on data that ACCDC has gathered. You can learn more about what those ranks mean here.

We have published more in-depth information on some native trees and shrubs, including details on propagation techniques, which you can view here.

Trees

Our native tree species grow in many different habitats throughout the province. Species vary in size from over 30 m to nearly as small as a shrub.
